Happy New Year!

Inside Out Jan/Feb 2014.  Photo by Lisa Cohen, styling by me.

Happy New Year!  If you are like me you will have only just caught up on the last few issues of all of the great Australian homewares mags - what a luxury to actually read the articles rather than just quickly scanning the images and cover lines!

I got to relive my fab day at the home of Nareen Holloway - co-owner of Marmoset Found homewares.  That's her delicious home on the cover of Inside Out, and those are her and partner Indy's DIVINE kids seen growling ferociously at our photographer, lovely Lisa Cohen.

Also in this issue is my garden - styled up for entertaining three different ways.  It was the shoot that inspired me to paint our garden wall hot pink.  And I doubt I'll ever paint it back to that conservative deep blue that it was.  Thanks to incredible photographer Alicia Taylor for such a great day in the yard.
My backyard - how much do I love this pink wall!  Photo by Alicia Taylor, styling by me.

So I guess it is on with 2014.  January and February are already filling up with some really exciting work projects. Jem's and my little family is growing up so fast - Belle is entering year 11 and Alex is starting year 9 at a new school so things are certainly happening around here. I'm excited  - and hope you are looking forward to your new year as much as we all are.

Back in the depths of our everlasting Melbourne winter (tell me I'm not exaggerating) I spent a gorgeous day with Bonnie & Neil, shooting their mouth-wateringly delicious Summer 2013 range, aptly named, South Pacific.

On hand was Phil from Katie Marx Flowers, who created the most divine floral and leaf garlands, and for a while there we almost forgot how cold it was outside!

The Old Manse House at Clunes makes the cover of Country Style!

Some stories I tell are more special than others - this one in particular holds a massive place in my heart.  You can read about my father-in-law Mick King and his wonderful partner Robin Morrissey's country home in the November 2013 Country Style.  It's our happy place, and that veranda you can see on the cover is somewhere that many hours are spent, many stories are told, and many corks are popped.  That's how Mick and Rob roll.

Photos by Lisa Cohen.  Story and styling by me.  With extreme thanks to Mick and Rob for sharing their latest adventure with us.  And to Emma Morrissey for her excellent assistance on the day.  And to Bissi and Dougal for being cute.

everybody needs good...

It was a slightly bizarre experience - being the prop stylist on a neighbours shoot when 750 years ago I spent a few years as the Neighbours publicist at Ten.  It seems the more things change...

This was an extremely fun shoot to work on with John Tsiavis and his team.  It's for the UK summer promotion for the show, and our client was my old Ten boss - the lovely Steph Bansemer-Brown, now with Freemantle Productions.

here are some out takes...

Country Style October 2013 - my first CS cover!

I tried to write something cool about how chuffed I am that one of the images from the gardening deco shoot I did with the incredible photographer Lisa Cohen make the front cover of the October issue of Country Style, but nothing sounded right - so let's just say I am BEYOND THRILLED.

Thanks to Beckie Littler, who proved herself to be an excellent chook wrangler in addition to being a gun assistant, and also Lisa's gorgeous assistant Annette O'Brien.

The October issue of Country Style is on sale now.

new Inside Out on sale today - featuring the gorgeous Poulier & Poulier home on the cover!

Lisa & Mark Poulier's home on the cover of Inside Out July/August 2013.
Photography by Armelle Habib story and styling by Heather Nette King

The new issue of Inside Out hits the stands today - featuring the swoon worthy home of Lisa and Mark Poulier and their family.  That's the living room on the cover, but my absolutely favourite room is the sitting room, with its dramatic black walls. This home is an excellent example of how to work a limited, almost monochromatic palette, whilst still achieving warmth, and a beautifully layered interior.

Lisa and Mark are the owners of wonderful Melbourne homewares brand, Poulier & Poulier.

Gorgeous photos by Armelle Habib, story and styling by me.

gorgeous Melbourne home - Jane Hall's colourful sanctuary

Joyous decorating.  That's what I call this.  In her new home, my lovely friend Jane Hall has once again created a scrumptious living space filled with colour, humour, joy and personality.   And, as she says in the story,  “Our home is full of things that make Lu and I smile... I am a complete bower-bird – very attracted to colour – and this home has masses of open shelving which I had absolutely no trouble filling.” Yup, no trouble at all.  It's heaven.

Masterchef Australia 2013 - the publicity shoot

Masterchef Australia 2013 - Photography by John Tsiavis, set styling by Heather Nette King
All shoots should be this much crazy fun (already it seems I have forgotten the exhaustion, stress, excitement... - it's kinda like childbirth in that respect).

Together with the fab teams from Ten (led by Anthony McCarthy) and Shine (Nat Kaplan) , and headed by celebrity photographer extraordinary, John Tsiavis (and his gang of excellent assistants) we spent another full-on day in the studio creating the publicity stills for the new Masterchef series that starts on-air tonight.

We shot Matt, Gary and George on five different sets - three of which I'll show you here. No prizes for guessing which is my favourite - yes, it's the classic stuck-way-out-in-the-desert, tragically
tired and rundown mexican cantina.  I can't tell you how rapt I was when the guys agreed to don the muscle shirts and diner-boy hats, and they really got into the spirit of things, particularly when we bought out the oversized can of yellow cheese sauce. Things got very messy.  And don't judge me  - but the sauce was actually delicious.  In a really wrong kind of way, that is.  Thanks to Trish Hunter for the loan of her amazing vintage caravan, and to my assistant slash nephew Henry-Jack for being all over it and knowing what I needed before I knew I needed it!  Oh and thanks to Annebelle my assistant slash daughter for whipping me up the ace menu board! And finally, ongoing apologies to Reuben for the death-sauce-in-the-eye incident - I am still having nightmares about it!

Here are some of the other sets:

And here is some behind the scenes action:

Don't judge it until you have tried it...
Excellent Henry-Jack making me a caravan shelf

And here are the shots, appearing in the press.
